Question

A 2.7 kg particle moving along the x-axis experiences the force shown in the figure. The particle's velocity is 2.3 m/s at x = 0 m. What is its velocity at x = 2 m and 4 m? (Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer. Assume the particle is initially traveling in the positive x-direction.)

x = 2 m     v = m/s x = 4 m     v = m/s A 2.7 kg particle moving along the x-axis experiences the force shown in the figure. The particle's velocity is 2.3 m/s at x = 0 m. What is its velocity at x = 2 m and 4 m? (Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer. Assume the particle is initially traveling in the positive x-direction.)

Explanation / Answer

Area from x = 0 to x = 2 gives change is momentum=> 10 * 2 * 1/2 = 10

Therefore change in velocity = 3.7 m/s positively => V at x = 2m = 6 m/s

Net area at x=4 = 0 => No change in momentum => V at x=4 = V at x=0 = 2.3 m/s
