Question

A flagpole of mass m = 10 kg and length L = 2m is attached

horizontally to the side of the building. It is held to the building by a cable

that makes an angle of ? = 37 ? with the horizontal. A person of mass

M = 85 kg decides to hang from the flagpole. The maximum tension in

the cable is T = 500 N before it breaks. (a) Find the maximum distance

away from the building that the person can hang. (b) Find the magnitude

and direction of the force at the point that the flagpole is attached to the

building.

Explanation / Answer

a)

T*sin(37)*2 = 1*9.8*10+85*9.8*L

L(max) = (600-98)/(85*9.8) =0.6m

b) force = (85+10)*9.8-500sin(37) =431(downward)

+500 cos(37) = 400(along)

Ftotal= 588.01 ( 47 degree downward to horizontal)
