Question

Explain Part d please!

Ball A with a mass of 100 g and an initial speed of 15 m/s collides in classically with ball B. Ball B has a mass of 500 g and is at rest before the collision. Ball A is bounced back with a speed of 5 m/s. Calculate the speed of ball B after the collision. Calculate the loss of the kinetic energy of the system. If the collision time is 0.02 seconds, what is the average force exerted on ball B during the collision? If the collision is elastic, comparing with the inelastic case, which of the following statements about the final speeds is true? The final speed of ball A will be greater, that of ball B will be smaller. The final speed of ball B will be greater, that of ball A will be smaller. The final speeds of both balls will be greater. The final speeds of both balls will be smaller.

Explanation / Answer

D. In case of elastic collision,

total initial momentum ,

Pi =15*100 = 1500 g m/s

hence ,

1500 = 500*v1+100*v2 ,

15 = v2+5v1,

as there will be n loss in KE,

1/2 *100*15^2 =1/2*500*v1^2 + 1/2*100*v2^2,

solving those two,

v2=5 m/s

v1 =2 m/s

note , 1: B , 2: A

so we can see, velocity of A remains the same but B increases
