Question

1. The rational decision making process has six steps; we know that as decision makers (who are human, not machines) we don’t always operate rationally. From the 6 step model, select ONE of these stages where you or someone you know in a decision making role has had difficulty (or where you speculate someone might have difficulty). Describe the stage/step that you have selected. What factors or conditions can “sabotage” this stage of the process and what can be done to prevent things from going wrong?

2. What does it mean to be a “good team player”? No one is perfect. What do you think you need to work on to be a “good team player” and to better contribute when you work with others on a group/team?

3. Self-efficacy (task specific self-confidence) and E--P-->Expectancy are similar concepts and have been shown to be important factors in employee motivation. These variables are important aspects of Social Cognitive Theory as well as Expectancy Theory, and don’t really have anything to do with MONEY, which is sometimes considered the ONLY motivator. As a manager, you can influence the employee’s self-efficacy and consequently their motivation. So…assume you are a manager who has been given the task of designing a new employee orientation/training program and you want to do whatever you can to be sure to incorporate your learning about self-efficacy/E--P--> Expectancy. Discuss 3 factors or aspects of the orientation/training program that you would focus on. Be as clear and specific as you can in your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Solution

1.

Weighing the alternatives is one of the most important steps in the decision making process. It calls for judicious and unbiased approach in weighing all options with their pros and cons by assessing the outcome of each alternative if it is applied in the given situation. The decision making process can be adversely affected if the alternatives are weighed in s biased manner or the assessment is not proper. Not doing enough research on the availability of options.

. An orientation program for increasing self efficacy should have the choice of modules for participants who may chose the most appropriate programs for enhancing efficacy. The skills thus acquired should be evaluated after completion of program for evaluation of program efficiency. Other aspects may include on the job training module to see how well the acquired skills are implemented by the candidates, and benchmarking their performance with best in class practices to motivate them to work harder to perform better.
