Question

A Carnot is operating between two heat reservoirs at temperature of 400 K to 300 K.

a). If the engine receives 1200 kilocalories from the resevoir 1200 kilocaloriesfrom the reservoir at 400 K in each cycle, how much heat does it reject toto the reservoir at 300 K?

b). If the engine is operated as a refrigerator (i.e.,in reverse) and receives 1200 kilocalories from the reservoir at 300 K, how much heat does it deliver to reservoir at 400 K?

c). How much work iss done by the engine in each case?

d). What is the efficiency of the engine in (a) and the coefficient of performance in (b)?

** please provide each question with a detailed step by step answer, thanks.

Explanation / Answer

Eff of carnot engine,n= W/heat supplied = (Qs -Qr)/Qs = 1-(T2/T1 ) ,

Qs= heat supplied, Qr=heat given /released,

T1 =temperature of reservoir receiving heat of 1200cal., T2= that of the reservoir at the other end,

so, (1200 -Qr)/1200 = 1-(300/400),

and work done here can be calculated as,,,, work/Qs =1-(T1/T2)

In a refrigerator, work,W= Q1 -Q2, ((because in it energy is supplied for warming up)

here Q2/Q1 = T2/T1

and Q1 = heat received,Q2=heat ejected,

T2= temp. at the end receiving heat, T1= that at the end of ejecting heat.

so, Q2=1200, T2=300,T1=400,
