Question
Suppose that a block is pulled at a constant velocity with a constant force in the presence of sliding friction. Answer the questions carefully.
(a) What is the net force on the block while it is moving at a constant velocity from point a to point b? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
(b) What is the net work done on the block while it is moving from point a to point b? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
(c) What is the change in the kinetic energy of the block as it moves from point a to point b at a constant velocity? Explain how you arrived at your answer.
(d) Does the Net Work-Kinetic Energy Theorem hold for this situation where friction is present?
Explanation / Answer
a) Zero : As because the body is moving with constant speed ie 0 accelaration, Thus net force must be zero.
b) Zero : As the net work done is change in kinetic energy. Since the speed of the body has not changed from a to b, thus the kinetic energy also remained constant, resulting in zero change, and thus zero work done
c) Zero : As the net work done is change in kinetic energy. Since the speed of the body has not changed from a to b, thus the kinetic energy also remained constant, resulting in zero change, and thus zero work done
d) Yes : it applies in any situation, but you have to take sum of work done by all forces, here including work done ny friction
