Question
1. A developer wishes to build two structures A and B on a common foundation. The foundation may take 5 or 7 months to construct. Work on structures A and B can be done simultaneously, but cannot begin until the whole foundation is completed. Structure A may take 3 or 4 months to build, while structure B may take 4 or 6 months to build. n time of the project. Determine the sample space S for the If the various combinations of construction times are all equally likely, what is the probability that the project will be completed in 10 months or less? a. b.Explanation / Answer
a. Sample Space for the completion of project
= (Time taken to complete foundaion, TIme for structure A, time for structure B)
= (5,3,4),(5,3,6),(5,4,4),(5,4,6),(7,3,4),(7,3,6),(7,4,4),(7,4,6)
= {9,11,9,11,11,13,11,13} hours
As foundation is bottle neck, it is required to complete first, then remaining time will be taken by building B if A starts building simultaneouly.
b.
Probability= There are 2 cases out of 8 cases in which project completed in less than 10 months
=2/8
=1/4
