Question

Please help me anwers these questions.  And EXPLAIN

To simulate gravitation effects in space, you design a large cylindrical space station with a radius of 200m. The space station has a moment of inertia I=5.34E10 kgm^2 when rotating about its center axis. Passengers would be on the inside surface of the cylinder.

a) calculate the angular velocity of the space station in order to simulate earths gravity at the outer edge of station

b) how much simulated "gravity" would astronauts on a second level 3.25m closer to the center of the station feel?

c) Calculate the Rotational Kinetic Energy of the Station

d) Calculate the torque required (at the outer edge of the station) to bring the space station to the angular speed from part a over a period of 2 days.

Explanation / Answer

w^2R = g

w = sqrt(9.8/200)

=0.221 rad/s

B) w^2*3.25

= 0.159 N/kg

c) 0.5*I*w^2

= 0.5*5.34*10^10*(0.221^2)

= 1.304*10^9 J

d)alpha= 0.221/(2*24*60*60)

FxR = I*alpha

= (5.34*10^10)*0.221/(2*24*60*60)

=68295.138 Nm
