Question
polarisation
A parallel beam of plane-polarized monochromatic light traverses a length l mm of an optically active medium which also scatters die light; die beam travels along the optic axis. The scattered light is observed in a direction which is perpendicular to both the direction of propagation of the incident light and to its plane of polarization. The intensity of the scattered light so observed exhibits equidistant maxima and minima along the length of the transmitted beam. Explain the origin of these. If theta in degrees/mm is the optical rotatory power of the medium, determine the number of minima which occur within the length l.
