Question
A thermodynamic system undergoes a process in which its internal energy increases by 450 J. If at the same time 250 J of work is done by the system, find the energy transferred to or from it by heat?
______ J
I have done problems similar to this, but I'm getting confused and turned around when asked to solve for the increase versus decrease and work done by versus on the system. Please show me in detail how to work this problem. Hopefully it will clarify how to approach this in the varying contexts. Thanks in advance!
Explanation / Answer
interval energy increases.. hence energy is transferred to system.
work is done by system.. hence energy is removed by heat..
hence,
Energy transferred = 450 - 250
= + 200 J
