Seven A box has a partition dividing it in two equal parts. A perfect gas is in one part, the other part is empty. The partition is removed. The gas expands freely. The box is perfectly insulated from the outside, and the expansion is against nothing so no work is done. What is the change in internal energy and the change in temperature? Why? Calculate the change in entropy by replacing the irreversible expansion with one on a reversible path, and use the perfect differential property of the entropy. (The answer to the temperature change question above is the clue. Use P V/n = RT. Also dV/V = InV ) Now suppose one side of the box has gas A in it the other gas B. Find the entropy change as each gas expands in to the domain of the other. (Mixing) Suppose there is a system with two states: on and off. The entropy is related to the distribution function by S = ?.Hereiis1and2.Therearetwo possible states. If the probability p of each of the two states is one half, what is the entropy? The information content I = ? . What is the information if the probability for the observation is one? 1) since the box is insulted, change in total internal energy of box is zero. Hence change in temperature is also zero.
