Question

5. The year is 2029, and, as predicted, robots have taken over the world. You are given the task to come up with a communication protocol that the robots won't be able to understand. You think back to the good old college years and think, "I sure am happy I took EECS 202!" You know the robots process audio with an ADC using f,8000 Hz. Your idea is to use a variety of tones that will sound the same to the robots, so they won't be able to interpret the meaning. You decide that one of your tones will have a frequency of fo 2000 Hz. What are 4 other frequencies that will be indistinguishable from fo to the robots?

Explanation / Answer

ADC works on the concept of sampling of different frequencies at a fixed rate called as sampling rate.

Here from the question the sampling frequency fs=8000Hz.

The tones that the robots wont understand the signals have one of the frequency fo=2000Hz.

To determine the other 4 frequencies we will use the concept of sampling.

f1=fs/2=8000/2=4000Hz.

f2=fs/2+fo=4000+2000=6000Hz

f3=f2/2-fo=3000-2000=1000Hz

f4=f2/2+fo=3000+2000=5000Hz , So by using the sampling phenomena frequency at every interval of the samples can be determined and those frequencies can be transmitted to the robots as a result they wont be able to interpret the meaning of our tones.

I hope it is very clear to you.Thank you.
