Question
problem 1)
Two blocks are connected by a massless rope and are on opposite sides of a pulley that can rotate about an axis
through its center as shown below. Let m1 = 4kg and m2 = 3 kg. Take the radius of the pulley to be R = 0.5 m and the mass
of the pulley to be M = 2 kg.
A) Find the acceleration of the system if the rope slides with no friction across the pulley so that the pulley does not turn.
B) Find the acceleration of the system if the rope does not slip on the pulley, so that the pulley turns as the blocks move.
Explanation / Answer
a.) 4*9.81-T=4*a
T-3*9.81=3*a
T=33.63 N and
a=1.4 m/s^2
B)now 4*9.81-T1=4*a
T2-3*9.81=3*a
and T1-T2=I*alpha=1/2*m*R^2*(a/R^2)
solving above 3 equations we get
T1=34.33 N T2=33.10 N
a=1.22 m/s^2 ans
