Question

Two Formula-one racing cars are negotiating a circular turn, and they have the same centripetal acceleration. However, the path of car A has a radius of 47 m, while that of car B is 38 m. Determine the ratio of the angular speed of car A to that of car B An automobile tire has a radius of 0.316 m, and its center moves forward with a linear speed of v = 22.5 m/s. (a) Determine the angular speed of the wheel. (b) Relative to the axle, what is the tangential speed of a point located 0.138 m from the axle?

Explanation / Answer

mw1^2r1 = mw2^2r2

w1^2*47 = w2^2*38

w1/w2 = sqrt ( 38/47) = 0.899

therefore ration of angular spped = 0.899

a)tangential speed of top point = 2v = 45 m/s

angular vel = v/r = 22.5 / 0.316 = 71.2 rad/sec

b)tan speed at 0.138 m = v+ wr = 22.5 + 9.68 = 32.18 m/s
