Question
A top loading washing machine has a spin cycle that rorates at frequency f. The spinning drum that holds the clothes has a radius R, and a particular piece of clothing has mass m. (Assume that the clothing is flattened tightly against the vertical wall of the drum, so that it has negligible thickness. Express answers in terms of f, R, m, g, and exact constants, please show work)
A. Find an expression for the magnitude of the wall's normal force acting on the piece of clothing as the drum spins.
B. Find an expression for the minimum coefficient of static friction that will allow a piece of clothing to remain stuck tothe inside wall of the drum, without sliding downward toward the bottom of the tub.
Explanation / Answer
(A). wall's normal force acting on the piece of clothing as the drum spins.is given as N=mV^2/R as it is centrifugal force but we have been given frequency f so v=2*pi*f*R thus N= m*4*(pi)^2*f^2*R ..........(B). for this net force in the vertical dirn must be zero so u*N=mg or u=mg/N using the result for N as in A we get u=g/(4*(pi)^2*f^2*R)
