Question
A 9820 kg sailboat is moving through the waters of the Atlantic. Initially, the boat is traveling at 20 mph, 29 degrees East of North. After 12 minutes, the boat is travelng at 35 mph, 31 degrees West of North. Three forces are acting on the boat, Force due to resistance from the water: 14 N, 17 degrees S of W Force from an auxiliary motor: 8 N, 17 degrees What is the net force (Fnet) acting on the boat? and degrees N of E What is the force of the wind (Fwind) on the boat? and degrees N of Ees E of N Force due to the wind: FwindExplanation / Answer
First find the vector(x and y) components of the initial velocity and final velocity. These are in m/s. Then take the final - initial velocity components, still in m/s, and divide each by the total time-12 minutes. That gives you the x and y component of the net force acting on the sail boat, F(net). Then take the magnitude of the components to find net force. To find F(wind), first find the components of F(water), F(motor). Then subtract the components form F(net): F(net) - F(water) - F(motor) = F(wind). You should be left with components of F(wind), which you can find the magnitude from. And to find the direction, simply tan-1(Fywind/Fxwind). Hope this helps! Please comment before giving a low rating, ratings are permanent!
