In your solution for part (a), does Kim receive more than the minimum amount she needs of any vitamin? If so, which vitamin is it?

Explanation / Answer

From the given data we have:

The amount of pills that would be required for meeting the corresponding nutritional requirement:

Cost for the number of respective pills:

Answer a: The least cost to meet Iron suplementation is $2.45 (for 49 pills of Maxivite), for Vitamin B-1 is $7.91 (for 158 pills of Maxivite) and for Vitamin B-2 is $7.2 (for 80 pills of Healthovite). The total least cost would be $17.56 (=$2.45+$7.91+$7.2).

The combination that would meet the requirement at lowest cost would be 49 pills of Maxivite,158 pills of Maxivite and for 80 pills of Healthovite. But since only one option can be chosen for Maxivite, we can choose to have 158 pills that will meet all the requirement for Vitamin B-1 and will give surplus of Iron.

Answer to a: The required combination that would meet the requirement at lowest cost is 158 pills of Maxivite and 80 pills of Healthovite, at the lowest cost of $17.56.

Answer to b: In doing so, we would be taking more than required amount of iron.
