Question
Two point charges, Q = -22 microCoulombs and Q= 59 microCoulombs , are separated by a distance of 12cm . The electric field at the point P is zero. How far from Q1 is P? Provide answer using 2 significant figures. Note: Please do not provide an answer or solution if you are uncertain, I asked this question peviously and got 5 different answers, all of which were wrong and of course that's not helpful. I don't need fast solutions, I need correct ones! P------x------Q1-------------12cm----------------Q2Explanation / Answer
As the charges are of opposite signs, the point of zero electric field will lie beyond the ends...Also the negative charge magnitude is less, the the the point will be closer to it...As clearly depicted in the question :
P------x------Q1-------------12cm----------------Q2
Now, At, P the electric field due to Q2 = electric field due to Q1
So, K*Q2 / (0.12 + x)^2 = K*Q1 / x^2
So, x = 0.188 m = 18.8 cm...Answer
