Question
In lectures 9 and 10, we derived two different expressions for the dielectric function of a collection of free electrons - one approximate expression, and a second one that is more accurate. In this problem we wish to compare these two results, by graphing them both in Matlab. In particular, you should compute the two different dielectric functions (omega). and then use these to calculate two different absorption coefficients of the silicon sample. Graph these two alpha (omega) functions versus frequency, on a single graph. The relevant range of frequencies to graph is 0.1 - 10 THz. The following parameters may be used in the context of the Drude model for doped silicon: N = 2.3 Times 1016 cm-3, tau = 0.189 picoseconds, and the effective electron mass is 26% of the mass of a free electron Reminder: Gamma from lecture 10 is related to tau from lecture 9 by: Gamma = 1/(2 tau). How does this compare to our earlier result? For this new result, consider the low-frequency limit, omegaExplanation / Answer
