Question

A 3.20kg hoop 1.50m in diameter is rolling to the right without slipping on a horizontal floor at a steady 2.50 rad/s.

A) Find the magnitude of the velocity vector of each of the following points, as viewed by a person at rest on the ground: (i) the highest point on the hoop; (ii) the lowest point on the hoop, (iii) a point on the right side of the hoop, midway between the top and the bottom.

B) Find the magnitude of the velocity vector for each of the points in part (C), except as viewed by someone moving along with same velocity as the hoop.

Explanation / Answer

a) i) At highest point, velocity = 2v = 2*r = 2*(1.5/2)*2.5 = 3.75 m/s

   ii) At lowest point, v = 0.

   iii) At midpoint, v = r2 = (1.5/2)*2.5*2 = 2.65 m/s

b) For someone moving with the hoop, the motion of the above points will be pure rotation.

Hence, for all the three points, v = r = (1.5/2)*2.5 = 1.875 m/s
