Question

From the recreation center, you start walking once around campus (see Google directions linked below.) What does Google assume for your average speed? (give your answer in m/s; provide the units.) http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=e+campus+circle,+Miami+33199&daddr=25.759426,-80.3784517+to:25.759005,-80.37064+to:25.753254,-80.370942+to:E+Campus+Cir&hl=en&sll=25.757034,-80.374517&sspn=0.010938,0.019033&geocode=FaYCiQEdZ4Q1-ymrrj6uOr_ZiDH23sXrMlIMPQ;FcIOiQEdrYU1-ynXtv44Jb_ZiDHYUIZH_K5qHw;FR0NiQEdMKQ1-ykTJC_GLb_ZiDH4jqgZnOjVcQ;Fab2iAEdAqM1-ynZ-rJjMb_ZiDE3leeCE_-OOQ;FfoBiQEdeoQ1-w&dirflg=w&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=16&via=1,2,3&t=m&z=16

Explanation / Answer

In my experience, it seems to be assuming about (3.58 - 4.02 ) m/s on average. However, it apparently uses more than just the distance to estimate the time. For example, one of my common biking routes comes up on Google Maps as taking 24 minutes for 3.7 miles (average 9.25 mph). Meanwhile, another common route shows up as 26 minutes for 3.3 miles (average 7.6 mph). Both routes are from my home to campus, but the slower one has more of an uphill grade to it. I'm not sure if that's what they're looking at to arrive at a different speed estimate.
