A thin square metal plate is 1.00 m on a side is located in the xz-plane. A charge of 400 nC is placed on the plate and can be taken to be distributed uniformly. Determine the
a. charge per unit area on each face of the plate.
b. the electric field 1.00 cm in the +y-direction from the plate.
c. the electric field 1.00 cm in the -y-direction from the plate.
a) charge per unit area = q/A = (400*10^-9 C)/((1 m)^2) = 4*10^-7. This is the charge for both sides. To get each side we must divide by 2, which equals 2*10^-7 C/m^2
b) Coulomb's law. E1y = kq/r^2 = (8.987*10^9 N[m^2]/[C^2])((2*10^-7 C)/(1*10^-2 m)^2) = 1.8*10^-7 N/C
c) Coulomb's law. E2y = kq/r^2 = -(8.987*10^9 N[m^2]/[C^2])((2*10^-7 C)/(1*10^-2 m)^2) = -1.8*10^-7 N/C
or should I be doing b and c with the 400nC charge, rather than the charge of a single face of the plate?
