Question

On Earth John Carter is an average weekend basketball player who is proud of his 0.50 meter vertical jump. After being transported to a planet called Barsoom (by some non-physical process!), he discovers that he has an amazing new jumping ability. While getting used to this new capability, he makes an amazing leap onto the top of a hill. The hilltop is 30 meters away from his starting point and 120 meters above the ground. John succeeds in landing on the hilltop by using maximum jump at 75 degrees. (Same takeoff speed on Barsoom as the vertical jump on Earth.) By first finding John's takeoff speed on Earth, find the acceleration due to gravity on Barsoom.

Explanation / Answer

v^2=2*g*h v=3.13 m/s [v*sin(75)]^2=2*g`*120 g`=0.038 m/s^2
