Question
The figure shows the cycle for a Carnot Referigerator. (the cycle moves counterclockwise) This cycle is the same as the Carnot engine except the direction along each path is reversed. Paths A and C are adiabatic (Q=0), and paths B and D are isothermal (dT = 0). Consider the working substance of this refrigerator to be an ideal gas. Fill in the chart and use the chart to answer questions.
For path A,W = ?, Q = 0, Internal energy = -W = ?
For path B, W = ?, Q = 0?, Internal Energy = ?
For path C, ?
For path D,?
as you an tell I don't reall know because I am not sure about my understanding.
W = nRdT do if the system is isothermal, won't W = 0, but also Q = nCdT so if the system is isothermal Q could be 0 also.
As far as how to distinguish net work, heat and internal energy changes, please help.
Thank you
Explanation / Answer
W is not nRdt ; W=Pdv ; Q=W+internal energy ; for path A , W = +, Q = 0, Internal energy = -W (negative) ; for path B, W = +, Q = +W, Internal energy = 0 ; for C , W = negative, Q = 0, Internal energy = +W ; for D , W = negative, Q = negative, Internal energy = 0
