Question

Explain why you personally agree/disagree with your choice of two of the following propositions:

1. Humans will never run out of life-sustaining resources because we can always invent new technologies and/or find substitutes for natural resources.

2. Stabilizing human population growth is not desirable because all economic growth is beneficial and would be curtailed without more consumers.

3. The value of other living organisms depends only on their usefulness to humans.

4. A vast majority of life forms previously existing on earth are now extinct so humans should not be concerned about destructive and waste-producing activities causing premature extinctions.

Explanation / Answer

1)Humans will never run out of life-sustaining resources because we can always invent new technologies and/or find substitutes for natural resources.

Disagree: Though we are inventing new technologies or find substitutes for natural resources we have not invented technologies which can produce life sustaining resources like water, air, vegetation, animals etc. Water is a vital resource and earlier it was abundant but now it is on the verge of scarce. The climate is one of the Earth's fundamental life support systems, which will decide our existence on Earth is also changing with negative effects on biodiversity and existence. Though we have invented technology to produce water or oxygen it is not feasible. It will not be available to increasing population of world. So we will run out of life-sustaining resources.

2. Stabilizing human population growth is not desirable because all economic growth is beneficial and would be curtailed without more consumers.

Disagree: From last century world population is growing very rapidly. Though increase in population will lead to large market and opportunity for economic growth for certain extent, it will not be continued after some limit. All the natural resources on earth are in a finite amount. If uses of these resources arevnot properly planned and managed it will be diminished and will not be available to increasing demand of population and their costs will be very high beyond the paying capacity of common man. This situation may cause inequality between rich and poor people and will lead to increased poverty rather than increased economic growth. So it is better to stabilize human population growth otherwise it will lead to decrease in economic growth.
