Question
Marjan, a skier of mass m, coasts a distance s, on level snow to a stop from a speed of v. Use the work-energy principle to find the coefficient of kinetic friction mk between the skis and the snow. What I do know is there is a N and mg that cancel each other and fall on the y axis and there is a kinetic fiction opposing the forward motions on the positive axis. I know the initial kinetic force is (1/2)mv^2 and the final is zero. What I need to know is net force on skier in the x direction? s and v are not part of the answer but the mk coefficient of kinetic energy is. There are no values so I basically need a formula for this one. mk=v^2/2gs is not the answer, s and v are NOT in the answers and mk IS.Explanation / Answer
Net force on skier in x direction is = - (Mk)*mg, where Mk is the coefficient of kinetic friction. This is the force acting on the skier while he is moving and covers a distance S and this force is acting in the -ve x direction or the direction opp to the motion. And when the skier comes to a halt the force acting on him in the x direction becomes 0 (assuming that no body is trying to push him while he is stationary).
