Question
On the remote island of Australia, there are different morphs of the Happy Peace Weasel, Mustella snappi. Most weasels show the dominant phenotype, with a green body (G) and short ears (E). However, because it is Australia, there exist other, more dangerous, morphs as well. Notable of these are two recessive traits, purple body (g) and lightning ears (e). Unfortunately, when these recessive traits appear in the same individual weasel, it causes a behavioral change that makes the weasel rip of the nose of the nearest person.
Bob has caught 2 weasels that are both green, with short ears. Genetic testing tells him that they are both carriers of both traits. He allows them to mate, in order to start his very own weasel farm. When the weasels have their litter, what % chance should Bob have of sustaining a bite on his nose when he first begins to socialize the pups? (SHOW THE PUNNETTE SQUARE)
Explanation / Answer
Dominant traits = Green body (G) and short ears (E).
Recessive traits = Purple body (g) and lightning ears (e).
Bob caught two carrier weasels and mated them.
Parental cross: GgEe X GgEe
Progeny:
G_E_ = 9/16 = Green and short
G_ee = 3/16 = Green and lightning
ggE_ = 3/16 = Purple and short
ggee = 1/16 = Purple and lightning
The probability for Bob to sustain bites = 1/16
