Question
On a sunny day, you and your physics-major friend, Sally Geek, go to an ice creamshop. The cone you are given is lled with melted ice cream of density 1.2g/cm^3
The diameter of the cone is 6 cm at the wide end and is 10 cm deep. Sally knows
that you took physics 132 at Calpoly Pomona. She wants you to find the pressure
at the bottom of the cone. Suddenly she makes a small hole of diameter 1 mm at
the bottom of the cone. The ice cream starts to leak. She says find the amount of
time it takes the ice cream to run out.
Explanation / Answer
pressure at the bottom of cone =gh =1.2*9.8*0.1 =1.176 Pa
by bernauli's principal,
v=2gh
volume of cone =1/3)r^2*h=9.42 *10^(-5) m^3
area of hole =7.85*10^(-7) m^2
time require for iv=ce cream to run out complety =volume /(velocit*area) =(10 to 0)942/((2g(dh)) *7.85) =infinity
hence as h decreases velocity decreases to.. hence time require to run out completely is idealy infinite
