Question

a. If experiment 3.2 had been conducted in an elevator moving downward at 4 m/s, would the maximum height reached by the projectile measured from the floor of the elevator be higher, the same, or lower than in the lab? (No calculations, but justify your answer.)
b. If experiment 3.2 had been conducted in a train car moving at 10 m/s in a direction opposite to that in which the projectile is fired, would the distance traveled by the projectile be longer, the same, or shorter than in the lab as measured by you performing the experiment in the train car? Explain your answer. How would a fixed observer looking at you from the side of the track as you pass by describe the motion of the projectile? Explain
aUsing the experimental value of the velocity for the medium setting, determine the range of the projectile for an angle of incidence of 35 degrees and a target at the same level as the launcher.
b. Set the launcher at an angle of 35 degrees. Use the attached plumb to set the angle.
c. The instructor will set the target box at the position you calculated.
d. Shoot! You have ONE TRY!! Your calculations had better be correct!! If you miss, your career as a physicist is seriously jeopardized!
To verify that the range is the same for a complementary launching angle:
e. Set the launcher at 55 degrees. Do not touch the target box.
f. Tell the instructor when you are ready to shoot.
g. Shoot! If your calculations were right the first time around, you should hit the target.

Explanation / Answer

a) initially whilee projectin it has negative y component of velocity.. hence net y velocity of projectile decreases .. hence height reached by projectile decreases ..
