The boom shown in the figure has a length of 4 m. and weighs 300 N. It is used to lift a weight of 400 N. If the boom is inclined at 53 degrees to the horizontal, calculate the tension T in the tie which is linked to the boom at a distance of 3 m from the ground. The correct answer is 550N, can someone please show and explain the procedures.

There will be some reaction forces at P. TO get rid of these irritating unknown forces, simply take torques about the point P :) :) Equating clockwise and anticlockwise torques, (T*3sin53) = (300*2cos53) + (400*4cos53) Solving, we get T = 552.61 N (Your teacher will be thrilled if you give the accurate answer! :) ) = 550 N (approximately) Hope you like my short and awesome method :)
