These are not good character to choose. In the construction of a tree the plesiomorphic trait is the one that the outgroup presents and we code that with 0. Then, an apomorphy is when a 0 turns to 1 (alternative state).

In this case they are assigning 0 (the plesiomorphic state) to both characters (short and long ears). That is not useful for the construction of a tree.

They need to be modified, for example, lets say long ears is the plesiomorphic state. (0) and the alternative state is short ears (1).
