Question

The figure below shows four graphs of position versus time for two bodies and their center of mass. The two bodies form a closed, isolated system and undergo a completely inelastic, one-dimensional collision on an x axis.

(a) In graph 1, are the two bodies moving in the positive or negative direction of the x axis?

positive
negative

(b) In graph 1, is the center of mass moving in the positive or negative direction of the x axis?

positive
negative

(c) Which graphs correspond to a physically impossible situation?
1 and 2
3 and 4
1 and 4
2 and 3

Explain your answer to part (c).

Note
i figured out that a and b are positive but dont know c. Help please and with explanations too. thakns.

Explanation / Answer

c)2 and 3 are impossible.

For 2, from t=0 to the point of colliion, the centre of mass lies outside the line joining two masses which is impossible.

For 3, the centre of mass has a positive velocity (slope is positive) when both of the particles have a negative velocity which is impossible.
