Question

A 7,500 pound truck is traveling on the freeway at 65 miles per hour when the driver suddenly notices a moose standing on the road 200 feet straight ahead. If it takes the driver 0.4 s to apply the brakes, and the coefficient of friction between the tires and the road is 0.5:

a. Can the driver avoid the moose without steering to one side?

b. Where will the truck come to rest relative to the moose?

c. If the driver must steer to one side, determine the speed of the truck as it passes the moose.

Explanation / Answer

mile/hr=1.46ft/sec
72mile/hr=105.6ft/sec
so time of reaction
s=ut
for 0.4 sec=105.6*0.4=42.24ft
now friction roce=mg=(0.5*7500*32.1)*travelled dist =1/2*m*V^2

x=347.3 feet

so the car goes total of 42.24+347.3=389.54 m

so the moose is at a distance of 200 ft only

the the driver has to steer it one side

v^2-u^2=2as==>v^2=105.6^2-2*0.5*32.1*(200-42.24)

the v will be 78.02m/sec
