Question

part 1
cheetah can run at a maximum speed 97.1 km/h and a gazelle can run at a max- imum speed of 79.2 km/h.
If both animals are running at full speed, with the gazelle 52.2 m ahead, how long before the cheetah catches its prey?
Answer in units of s
part 2
The cheetah can maintain its maximum speed for only 7.5 s.
What is the minimum distance the gazelle must be ahead of the cheetah to have a chance of escape? (After 7.5 s the speed of cheetah is less than that of the gazelle.)
Answer in units of m

Explanation / Answer

1. the cheetah must travel 52.2 m (0.0522 km) farther than the gazelle in the same amount of time
and d = v*t
so
(v t)cheetah = (v t)gazelle + 0.0522
97.1 t = (79.2 t) + 0.0522
solve for t (it will be in hours)
t = 0.002916 h = 10.50 sec .....Ans

2 . distanve travel by cheetah in 7.5 sec

d = 97.1 km/h x 7.5/3600 = 0.2023 km = 202.30 m
