Question
The suspension for the landing gear of an aircraft is shown. The wheel is attached to bar B C , which slides vertically without friction in housing A, which is fixed to the frame of the aircraft. The spring is precompressed so that it does not undergo additional deflection until the force supported by the landing gear is sufficiently large. Further, if the force supported by the landing gear exceeds a limit, the suspension "bottoms out" and deflects no more. Specify the spring stiffness and initial length if h = 18 in. for F le 545 lb and h = 11 in. for F 1,450 lb.Explanation / Answer
Let the initial length be lo and stifness constant be k ..
Now according to first condition
k(lo - 18) = 545 ............ (1)
Now according to second condition
k(lo - 11) = 1450 ............ (2)
Dividing (2) by (1) ..
(lo - 11)/(lo - 18) = 2.66
=> 2.66lo - 47.88 = lo - 11
=> 1.66lo = 36.88
=> lo = 22.22in
Now putting it in either equation ..
k = 129.14
