Question
You are driving through town at 16 m/s when suddenly a car backs out of a driveway in front of you. You apply the brakes and begin decelerating at 3.2m/s2.A) How much time does it take to stop?
5 seconds to stop.
B) What is your speed after braking for 1/2 the time in part A?
8m/s
C) If the car backing out was initially 55 meters in front of you, what is the maximum REACTION TIME you can have before hitting the brakes and still avoid hitting the car?
Could someone help me with part C (and if it comes to some sort of quadratic equation, how to solve this equation) and also the logic behind the solution? Why you use the formula, what reaction time means, etc.
Explanation / Answer
s= vi t- 1/2 a t^2 0= 16 t - 0.5*3.2 t^2 0 =16t -1.6 t^2 16t=1.6t^2 16=1.6t t=10sec
