Question
A block of mass m = 3. 70 kg is pushed a distance d = 5. 40 m along a frictionless, horizontal table by a constant applied force of magnitude F= 16 degree N directed at an angle theta = 20 degree below the horizontal as shown in the figure below. Determine the work done on the block by the applied force. J Determine the work done on the block by the normal force exerted by the table. J Determine the work done on the block by the gravitational force. Determine the work done by the net force on the block. JExplanation / Answer
(i) Horizontal force applied = 16 cos200 = 15 N
Distance pushed = 5.4 m
Work done = Fx x d = 15 x 5.4 =81 J ( Work is done only by horizontal force)
(ii) work done by normal force = 0 ;Since, displacement of block in normal direction is zero
(iii) work done by gravitational force = 0, Since gravitation force acts downward and there is no displacement of block in downward direction
(iv) Total work done = 81 J
