Question

The biggest stuffed animal in the world is a snake 420 m long, constructed by Norwegian children. Suppose the snake is laid out in a park as shown in the figure below, forming two straight sides of a 121? angle, with one side 275 m long. Olaf and Inge run a race they invent. Inge runs directly from the tail of the snake to its head, and Olaf starts from the same place at the same time but runs along the snake.

(a) If both children run steadily at7.5km/h, Inge reaches the head of the snake how much earlier than Olaf?

(b) If Inge runs the race again at a constant speed of7.5km/h, at what constant speed must Olaf run to reach the end of the snake at the same time as Inge?

For question a, i got the answer 6.52s and still got it wrong

Explanation / Answer

using cosine rule, third side of triangle (side along which Inge runs), = x (say) x^2 = 275^2 + 145^2 -(2x275x145cos(121)) so x = 371m (a) so, Inge runs 371m, and Olaf runs 420m as speed is same, time difference = 420/v - 371/v = 49/v where v = 7.5km/hr = 2.0833m/s so time difference = 49/2.0833 = 23.52s Ans. ______________________________________________________________________________________ (b)if time is same, then 420 / v1 = 371 / v2 we know that v2 = 7.5km/hr = 2.0833m/s, so v1 = 420 x 2.0833 / 371 = 2.358m/s = 8.5 km/hr Ans.
