Question

Suppose red-striped laughing frogs are diploid and have 32 chromosomes in somatic cells.
Answer the following questions.

(a) How many pairs of homologous chromosomes does a red-striped laughing frog have in its somatic cells?
(b) How many chromosomes are there in a haploid set?
(c) How many chromosomes are there in a mature sperm cell?
(d) How many chromosomes are there in a somatic cell just after mitosis?
(e) How many double-stranded DNA molecules are there in a somatic cell as mitosis is about to start?
(f) How many chromosomes are there in a cell prior to DNA replication?

Explanation / Answer

a)The number of pairs of homologous chromosomes that the red-striped laughing frog will have in its somatic cells is 16.This is because 2n = 32, n= 16

b)Number of chromosomes in haploid state (n) is 32/2 = 16.

c)In a mature sperm , there will be n number of chromosomes i.e 16

d)Just after mitosis, there will be same number of chromosomes as in diploid state i.e 32.

e)The number of double-stranded DNA molecules in a somatic cell as mitosis is about to start will be equal to the number of chromatids.Prior to mitosis, each chromosomal DNA has replicated and each chromosome has 2 chromatids. So, 32 chromosomes will have 64 chromatids and so there will be 64 double stranded DNA molecules.

f) Prior to DNA replication, there will be 32 chromosomes.
