Question
Vector V1 is 7.0 units long and points along the negative axis. Vector V2 is 8.3 units long and points at 60 to the positive x axis.A. What are the x and y components of vector V1 ? -7, 0 units
B. What are the x and y components of vector V2? 4.2, 7.2 units
C. Determine the magnitude of the sum V1+V2. 7.7 units
D. Determine the angle of the sum V1+V2. ? counterclockwise from the positive -axis
I NEED HELP WITH Part D. This is the work I've done and it keeps coming up wrong.
V2 = 8.3cos(60) + 8.3sin(60)
Vx = -7.0 + 4.15 = -2.85
Vy = - 2.85
V= (-2.85)^2+(7.2)^2
= 59.96 = 7.74
= tan^-1(7.74/-2.85) = -69.78
I keep getting it wrong.
Explanation / Answer
V1in x-direction is -6.6 V1 in y-direction is 0 V2 in x-direction is 8.0*cos(40) = 6.13 V2 in y-direction is 8.0*sin(40) = 5.14 The resulting vector V3 points to (-0.47,5.15) (just adding the x and y values together) The magnitude is (0.47^2 + 5.15^2)^(1/2) = 5.17 The angle is cos(a) = -0.47/5.17
