Question

10)Consider the genetics of the ABO blood groups. A man of blood gropu B is being sued by a woman of blood group A for paternity. The woman's child is blood group O. (a) is this man the father of this child? Explain. (b) If this man actually is the father of this child, specify the genotypes of both parents. (c) If it was impossible for this group B man to be the father of a type O child, regardless of the mother's genotype, specify his genotype. (d) If a man was blood group AB, could he be the father of a group O child?

Explanation / Answer

The alleles for blood group in humans are Ia, Ib and i.

For blood group A ,we have IaIa and Iai

For B , we have IbIb and Ibi

For AB -IaIb

For O- ii

(a) As the man has blood group B then he will have alleles for blood group as

1. Ib and i or

Ib and Ib

And mother can have alleles as

1. Ia and Ia

2. Ia and i

So the possible combinations are

IaIb-blood group AB

Iai-blood group A

Ibi-blood group B

ii-blood group O

So the conclusion is that the man can be father of child if he has genotype as (Ibi) and mother has (Iai).

(b). If this man is father of child then the genotypes of the parents will be as discussed above i.e

Father- Ibi

Mother-Iai

(c). If the man's genotype is IbIb then he cant be the father because he will have gamates as Ib and Ib, so regardless of mother's genotype he cant be the father because he mist have one gamate as i that is for blood group O.

(d). If the man has blood group AB then he will have genotype and IaIb and gamates will be Ia and Ib ,then he cant be the father because again he is missing that allele i for blood group O.
