Question
You are testing a new industrial lubricant to see if it really does give an approximately frictionless surface. You set up an inclined plane tilted at 45 degrees with respect to the horizontal. You cover the plane and the ground right in front of it with the lubricant. You plan to release a 1kg brick from rest 10 m up the incline. In the flat area just in front of the base of the incline, you place a 2kg brick, and you set up a motion detector to capture their velocity when the two bricks collide and stick together.
a. What is the velocity of the 1 kg brick at the bottom of the incline, before it strikes the 2 kg brick?
b. What is the momentum of the 1 kg brick immediately before the collision?
c. What is the velocity of the 2 brick system (stuck together) after the collision?
Explanation / Answer
a. v^2 = u^2 + 2as
= 0 + 2x(9.8/2)x10
v = 11.77 m/s
b. momentum = mass x velocity = 11.77 kg.m/s
c. applying conservation of momentum , 1x11.77 = 3xv
v= 3.92 m/s
