Question

1. For circuit below, determine V1and V2given R1=10K? and R2=20K?. (1K? = 103?). Verify VT= V1+ V2. Show your calculations.VT= 5V.

For some reason the Upload Image isn't working for the pic, but it's a pretty simple circuit. Battery at the bottom that's Vt=5v. It goes clockwise through R1 and R2 which are in series, and then back to the other side of the battery. It is asking for V1which it has positioned above R1, and V2 which is positioned above R2.

I'm a bitconfused what exactly it's asking for, wouldn't V1 just be 5v since the battery goes directly into it? But then that doesn't make any sense since V1 + V2 are supposed to add up to 5v... Just lost where to start here. Thanks.

Explanation / Answer

Kirchoffs law is that the input voltage in a series cct equals the voltage across the resistors. R(T)= R1 + R2 = 30Kohms V(R1) = 5 x 10/30 = 1.67v V(R2) = 5 x 20/30 = 3.33v or V(R2) = 5 - V(R1)
