Question

A garden hose is attached to a water faucet on one end and a spray nozzle on the other end. The water faucet is turned on, but the nozzle is turned off so that no water flows through the hose. The hose lies horizontally on the ground, and a stream of water sprays vertically out of a small leak to a height of 0.81 m. Find the gauge* pressure of the water: a.) inside the hose, sufficiently far from the hole. 7938 Pa b.) halfway up to the top of the spray. ? Pa c.) at the top of the spray. 0 Pa I don't really understand how to get part B and C. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

a) Pressure at 0.81 m = density x gravity x height = (10^3)(9,81)(0.81) = 7.95 kPa

b) at half way, h= 0.81/2 = 0.405 m

P = (10^3)(9.81)(0.405 -0.81) = - 3.97 kPa (same magnitude but a Negative Gauge pressure)

c) zero ,
