Explanation / Answer

5Ans) D. to make NAD+

A series of metabolic steps used to extract the energy from the organic molecules like glucose is called cellular respiration.If the cellular respiration occurs in the absence of oxygen, it is called anaerobic cellular respiration. Lactic acid and alcoholic fermentation are types of anaerobic respiration which involves generation of NAD+ molecules from the NADH2. Glucose in anaerobic respiration produces only 2 ATPs and its rate depends on the availability of NAD+. When the NAD+ depleted in the cell the glycolysis gets inhibited and in order to regenerate NAD+ the cell under carrying fermentation.

In skeletal muscles, there is high demand for energy so it depends upon the anaerobic glycolysis. The skeletal muscles use the lactic acid fermentation for production of energy.

Lactic acid fermentation: the pyruvate which is produced in glycolysis converted to lactic acid by the lactate dehydrogenase which results in the generation of two NAD+ molecules from the 2 NADH2. The NAD+ molecules produced further drive the glycolysis.

Pyruvate + NADH2        =>       lactic acid + 2 NAD+ + CO2

6Ans) B. catabolism

Catabolism is an exergonic process in which large complex molecules like carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins are degraded into simple molecules like monosaccharides, fatty acids, and amino acids. The energy released during degradation of complex molecules are conserved in the form of ATP. The catabolism is regulated by the many signals such as hormones (eg. epinephrine)

7Ans) B. oxidation

The reactions in which electrons are removed from the one chemical species are called oxidation reactions and the process is called oxidation. In oxidation reactions, the oxidation number of chemical species changed after the loss of electrons.

Mg                   =>                   Mg2+ + 2 e-
