Question

2) The gel below shows two different loci run on a single gel. Using the gel pictured below, tell which suspect is innocent of any crime. If all possible alleles for each locus are pictured in the gel, what is the probability that the other suspect did not commit the crime? (Lanes 1-4 = locus 1, lanes 5 - 8 = locus 2; lanes 1 & 5: blood sample from crime scene, lanes 2 & 6: victim, lanes 3 & 7: suspect 1, lanes 4 & 8: suspect 2) (5 points) 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 PEPE | | || | | | | 3) Gené et al. (1998) examined four of the microsatellite loci used by the FBI in Catalonia (NE Spain). They found 8 alleles for D3S1358, 10 alleles for D8s1179, 13 alleles for D18S51, and 11 alleles for D19S253. If a Catalonian man matched DNA taken from a crime scene, what is the probability (if the evidence was not planted or contaminated) that he was never at the crime scene? (5 points)

Explanation / Answer

In the lane 1: the sample which is obtained from crime place is not matching with the victim means it clearly indicates that it is the sample of criminal or any other person who is present there. We can see in the first half of the gel that lane first bands are clearly matching with the lane 3rd bands. It indicates that the sample obtained from the crime spot is the content of suspect 1 or lane 3.

means suspect one is a criminal.

In the second half of the gel: the sample which is obtained from crime spot is not similar with victim means it is a sample of another individual.

We can see that the bands of crime spot sample is matching clearly with suspect 1 which are placed in lane 7.

so we can say that the sample obtained from crime spot was the sample of suspect 1 lane 7.

So Sample 1/ lane 1= suspect 1 lane 3

Samaple 2 lane 5= suspect one lane 7

we just need to match the similar band because every individual have different pending patterns. Similar bands indicates that both of the sample is from the same individual.
