Question
You are given the following circuit with:
V = 60 V, R1 = 6 W, R2 = 8 W, R3 = 2 W, and R4 = 5 W:
1) calculate the toatla equivalent resistance of the circuit.
2) Compare the magnitude of the voltage drops across each resistor.
V1 > V2 > V4 > V3
i know this is an answer, but can you expain why?
3) Compare the magnitudes of the currents through each resistor.
I1 > I3 = I4 > I2
i know this is an answer, but can you expain why?
4) What is the power dissipated in R4?
Explanation / Answer
R3 adn R4 are in series R34 = R3 + R4 = 7 ohm R34 and R2 are in parallel therefore 1/R(234) = 1/R34 + 1/R2 R(234) = 56/15 ohm R(234) and R1 are in series hence R(eff) = R(234) + R1 R(eff) = 146/15 ohm equivalent resistance is 146/15 ohm current through R(eff) = V/R(eff) = 900/146 A even through R1 is the same so i(r1) = 900/146 A l(r2) = 2.88 A I(r34) = 3.29 A so V(1) = 900/146*6 = 36.99 V V(2) = 2.88*8 = 23.04V V(3) =3.29*2 = 6.58 V V(4)= 3.29*5 = 16.45 V hence V1 > V2 > V4> V3 even comparing the current values we get I1 > I3 = I4 > I2 power through R4 = V4^2/R4 = 16.45^2/5 = 54.12 watt.
