Question
1 pts Question 19 Which of the following statements regarding the complexity of living organisms is FALSE o The body size of the largest living organisms has increased over evolutionary time. O The complexity of multicellular organisms, as measured by the number of cell types, has increased over evolutionary time. O Natural selection always results in an increase of complexity over evolutionary time Modern bacteria and archaea are not always more complex than their ancestors that lived before the origin of multicellular life OExplanation / Answer
Answer: The correct option for this question is Option C. It is now established that natural selection NOT always results in increase in complexity over evolutionary time. There have been several examples which have proven that natural selection often leads to simplicity rather than complexity. There are few examples which can prove it such as; cave fish lost its eyes during the course of time, parasitic organisms such as tapeworms lost their gut over evolutionary time. The presence of vestigial organs in several animals and humans also suggest that natural selection tends to simplification. Some primitive animals are also known to be simpler than their ancestors, for eg. ancestors of brainless starfish had brains.
