Question
Brittany is a 52-year-old triathlete. She has been participating in half Ironman distance triathlons for several years. She is planning on competing in four races this year, and would like to qualify for the national competition in the fall. In hopes of improving her performance, she has made an appointment with you to review her nutrition during workouts and races. She provides you with a sketch of her usual intake (and race times) during a half Ironman:
• Swim (1:40): no food or drink
• Bike (3:00): three 16oz bottles of water, two high-protein energy bars, and a peanut butter sandwich
• Run (1:50): sips of water at every aid station, 1–2 gels
What is your initial assessment of Brittany’s nutrition during workouts/ races?
What can she change to improve her race day nutrition?
Explanation / Answer
Brittany is doing, lot of exercise and taking nutritional diet but I think, some changes are required in order to improve race day nutrition.
Some changes are:
1. Before swimming, Brittany's should eat diet that is carbohydrate and protein rich. As, an athlete she need both carbohydrate and proteins.
2. After run, she should include carbohydrate rich food, include fruits in her diet and have glass of milk and banana.
