Question
Wilson et al. (modified from 2011) followed a set of male health professionals for 20 years. Of all the men in the study, 8000 drank no coffee and 2500 drank on average more than 6 cups per day. In the "no coffee" group, 125 developed advanced prostate cancer during the course of the study, and 20 in the "high coffee" group did. Complete the following contingency table for these data, following the convention recommended in Ch 2 for placement of explanatory variable and response variable. No Total Coffee No Total 10500 What association is suggested?Explanation / Answer
Association: From the above contigency table, it is clear that there is only a weak inverse association between coffee intake and advanced prostate cancer development. Men who consumed on an average more that 6 cups of coffee per day had lower adjusted relative risk for advanced prostate cancer development compared to non drinkers. i. e, out of the total men who developed prostate cancer, 86% were non coffee drinkers. Hence there is some weak inverse relation with caffeine intake and prostate cancer development.
